CONTEST! Spread the word about notchinamade.net
What better way to launch a new site than a contest! And what a more appropriate gift for the launching of a site spreading awareness of the dangers or manufacturing in China than a $50 gift card to AmericanApparel.net?!
You have never heard of American Apparel? Please do go check them out then. The owner, dove built the company on the premise that clothing manufacturers CAN produce high quality clothing and treat their workers well by paying them a “living” wage and providing a healthy work environment. He makes sure of this by keeping everything he does in-house. This is called “vertical manufacturing”. I have toured the factory in LA myself and can vouch for the fact that AA treats their employees well. Dove himself is quite eccentric, and though I may not agree with all of the provocative marketing he sometimes uses. I APPLAUD his desire to see manufacturing change and build a company that has now become internationally known. The knitwear itself is also some of the best I have ever felt!
On to the contest.
To enter simply write a post on your blog announcing www.notchinamade.net and briefly explaining the idea behind the site. I would love it if you used the bottom provided on the button page in your post, but it is not required. In the post also include a link to this post and let your readers know about the contest. Once you have done this, come back to this post and enter your POST address and name here. The other upside is you will have a link to your blog right in the post- which may bring you more traffic! But PLEASE make sure and link to your post and not your blog.
Faithful readers don’t fret! Just because you don’t have a blog doesn’t mean you can’t enter for a chance to win $50 spending at American Apparel. Simply enter by sending out an email about Not China Made (dot) Net containing a link to this blog, brief information on it’s purpose, and information about the contest with a link to this post, to FIVE of your friends. Just make sure to copy me at notchinamade@mac.com and I will put your name in the hat!
On Monday, August 20th I will be drawing a name from the hat and you will see it via VIDEO BLOG on both this site and my personal blog.
Again, you are not required to use the image above, but I would really like it if you did!
Please add your link below:

Just wondering what your thoughts are re: American Apparel’s advertising?
Good Topic BD-
My thoughts are that I wish it had an ounce of the integrity the working environment has. As I mentioned in a comment on my other blog, my former boss and I met dove and toured the shop. He questioned him greatly about the irresponsibility of promoting sexuality so much. He has such a passionate story and desire to promote responsible manufacturing, yet lacks sexual integrity for his company. My boss tried to explain that if he views it away from a spiritual perpective and sees that statistically promiscuity is incredibly harmful to your body… that he should be responsible and not promote it. I have noticed sometimes (for a season) it will clean up a bit, and I’ll be happy about that, then the next it will be raunchier again, I don’t like that.
In my ideal world everyone would manufacture the way that AA does… and if that were true than My main focus of AA would be how I wish their marketing would clean up a bit. I have to value them now though because though they have the sexuality thing totally wrong, they are an incredible example when the topic is ethical business model in manufacturing. And b/c that is one of the focuses of this blog I have to highlight them.
On a side note- having come from the Fashion Industry. One thing that has always baffled me is the idea that clothing is taken out of, or made minimal in fashion.
Great question BD.
