Callie Williams on Etsy

Check out a line of products made out of gently used items at Callie Williams Etsy store, Not Made in China.

A little bit on Callie:

I am a UF grad with a BFA in photography. I love art, baseball, organic gardening and creating . I’m a homeschool mom of 1 boy. It’s a work of heart and I’m so glad I chose to do it. 99% of my materials are either second hand or made in the USA. I’m not against the Chinese, I’d just rather not take my chances on being a part of someone’s mistreatment.

I’ve been buying used or made in the US stuff (if I can help it) for about 7 maybe 8 years now. The reasons I do it are to avoid contributing to sweatshops and harming the environment. The taking from resources to create new things and then the transport of things over long distances really take their toll on the environment and our dwindling resources.

I’ve been on Etsy for two months now and I really love the community there. Sales are slow right now. I haven’t made my first sell yet, but we “newbies” are often reasured that sells will come in time. I’m not worried. I believe in what I’m doing and I feel it’s the right thing. I’ve even been encouraged to sell some photos. I’m real excited about the whole thing.

Now with all of the recalls, maybe it will wake the world up to the other reasons to shop locally.

Check her out, her prices are quite reasonable and her products are cute.

Pioneer Wordworkers- Brand Spotlight

By Stacey W.

We all know that bad things happen to good people. And for some, more than once in their lifetime. Many of us either are those people or we know them personally.

I would like to tell you about Joe and Lara Chandler of Pioneer Woodworkers.

I don’t know them personally, but I do know their story. And I think you will want to know it too.

Several weeks ago, I received an email from their D.I.L., April, letting me know that they were leaving for Portales, New Mexico that very wee morning. 2:00 am to be exact! Her husband’s parents had just lost their business; their sole means of living had been totally destroyed by fire. The building, the wood, the tools, EVERYTHING! They live next to their business, and thankfully, their home was not harmed.

Once Again Children’s Recalls Galore

Published by Mommy Zabs under Featured, Toys, Lead, Recall

Yes It’s true. More than a half million toys imported from China were recalled today. The CPSC released 10 different recalls on childrens’ products today. Does anybody else wonder why the CPSC seems to do this in batches?

Yes, once again I have one of the products. The Baby Einstein blocks. Fortunately they are dated before the tainted ones are. Please make sure to look at the products belos. If an item looks familiar click to read more information. Pass these links on to your friends if you think they may have a tainted product. The email link on the bottom of the post pages will give you an easy way to do that. They will thank you.

Taken from Reuters, Toy recalls fuel momentum toward U.S. safety reforms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the U.S. product safety agency came under fire in Congress on Thursday over a wave of recalls of lead-tainted children’s toys made in China, with Democrats calling for changes at the federal watchdog.

“Let’s face it — our consumer product safety system is busted and in need of major reform,” said Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin at a Senate subcommittee hearing.

He called for more funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and praised legislation that would give the agency more staff, as well as tougher rules to deal with globalized manufacturing and shoddy imported goods.
